Many people think that detox is just starvation. They tend to see detox as just another of today’s buzzwords and not a means to gain or even regain health.

Nothing could be further from the truth, however, it is very important that it is done correctly.

We are surrounded by toxins & chemicals daily. They are in our food, our water, in our air, and almost everything around us (unless we manage to live surrounded by nature).

We wash and bathe with products laced with chemicals, then use chemical-laden makeup and skin preparations, hair products, shaving products, and more chemicals to smell good, soften our skin, treat our blemishes, and much, much more. Our skin is soaking up these chemicals daily.

We are given vaccines and amalgam fillings full of mercury.  Our water is laced with lead and other heavy metals, our drinking water is contaminated with fluoride & chlorine and we are consuming food that is being sprayed with harmful toxic chemicals. All of these toxins put pressure on our body’s resources and break down our defences resulting in ill health and disease. We see this all around us with obvious signs of obesity as well as huge amounts of people with cancer, diabetes, auto-immune disease, high blood pressure, heart disease etc. This may appear normal to the young of today but older people did not see this level of disease and obesity in their younger years. There are reports saying that the older generation is very likely to outlive their children and grandchildren!

The body is, of course, able to deal with a certain amount of toxins but it is not built to deal with the massive daily onslaught of chemicals, toxins and additives in today’s daily life!

In our grandparents’ days (not that long ago) we had nothing like this amount of toxins in the environment. In those days we lived a much more natural way of life mainly eating only foods that were local and in season unsprayed/untreated with insecticides, pesticides, fungicides and chemicals. Insecticides, pesticides, fungicides etc were introduced in the 1930s.

Research shows that these chemicals and toxins accumulate in the body and the brain and are the cause of today’s huge obesity problem, disease and modern illnesses unknown a couple of generations ago.

The purpose of a detox is to cleanse the body of toxic substances and accumulated waste as this allows the body to heal itself and restore balance.

A detox will provide a rest for the gut.

Our gut greatly controls our health and well-being, if our gut is not working well, we cannot assimilate the vitamins & minerals, fats, proteins and carbohydrates from our food.

Our gut needs a break from fighting off the constant overload of toxins and chemicals in the diet, it needs time for healing, rebuilding and replenishing.

So, a good detox will clean up the gut first.

Part of detox involves clearing out debris from the gut whilst providing the body maximum nutrition that doesn’t require the digestive system to do much work.

This is where juicing comes into the equation.

A good detox will provide organic toxin-free easy to digest nutrition via vegetable, fruit and herb juices which can replenish the gut flora naturally.

Probiotics may be included and plenty of clean water is used to cleanse and hydrate.

Juices and smoothies, made with organic vegetables and herbs provide the body with all the nutrients it needs while allowing the gut to rest.

Treatments are suggested during a good detox such as sauna, dry body brushing, colonic irrigation, colonic massage, lymphatic drainage massage and all forms of massage.

Some forms of gentle exercise such as yoga, Tai Chi and Qi Gong are often used.

A juicing detox is designed to:

Rest and replenish the gut by eliminating foods high in heavy metals, contaminants, chemicals and allergens

Promote toxin elimination

Provide your body with healthy nutrients

Detoxing a minimum of twice a year is suggested. Whether you embark on a short detox and cleanse or go all out and detox for 1/ 2 weeks, your body will be grateful.

Completing a juice cleanse is not easy for everyone and it should be taken seriously.

There will be highs, and there may be lows, this is what to expect:

The first day of a juice cleanse is often relatively easy, it will usually start with warm water with lemon in the morning followed by cold-pressed vegetable/fruit juices throughout the day.

If you are a  caffeine drinker you may suffer from headaches, sluggishness and irritability, as the body is not used to functioning without caffeine. It is often recommended that caffeine drinkers wean off caffeine in the days leading up to a detox/cleanse.

It is recommended to stay active during a cleanse but some people find their energy levels drop somewhat and feel the need to rest.

Warm/hot drinks are recommended to help ease any hunger pangs.

On day 2 you may wake up feeling lighter although if your body was particularly in need of detox before your cleanse, you may experience some tiredness. It is very important to drink plenty of water to help flush toxins faster. Your body is working hard to cleanse itself at this point, and you’ll need extra sleep to recuperate.

On day 3 people often feel weightless, energized, and full of life. Your digestive system is fully rested and you will no longer experience the intense hunger pangs of the previous days.

It is very important to come off of a cleanse gradually. Now is the time to introduce healthy, raw, whole foods to break the cleanse. Light vegetable soups with plenty of fruits and veggies are needed for the days following your cleanse.

And remember to enjoy your cleanse experience! Once it’s complete, you’ll feel lighter, healthier and more enlightened than ever.
